Installing a Water Filtration System in Your Home

Patsy Peterson

Filtering the water coming into your home can offer a lot of benefits for you and your family. Depending on the source of the water coming into your home, there may be many different contaminants that you can eliminate with a water filtration system that is tailor-made for your situation.

Understanding Water Filtration Systems

There are many different water filtration systems on the market, and knowing what you need in your home is a critical first step to installing any filter system. Some systems are designed to remove heavy metals like iron, magnesium, and copper from the water, and others are more suited to biological material that can get into your water.

In either case, the filter media and the size of the system need to be appropriate for the home, the amount of water you use, and the space you have to put it in. The best place to start is to have the water coming into your home tested to determine what is in the water that needs filtering out.

Selecting a System

Once the water is tested, the company installing the water filtration system can help you decide on a system that is most appropriate to your situation. If you want a whole-house system, installing the water filtration system on the main water line coming into the home will ensure that no matter what tap the water comes from, it is filtered water.

Sometimes filtering all the water in the home is not necessary, so people opt for smaller water filtration systems in specific lines, but the filters for those systems are often limited to specific contaminants, and need replacing pretty often.

If you need water softening and filtration, there are water filtration systems that can handle both needs simultaneously. The water will run through the filter first, then the softener, and then out to the rest of the home. Water softeners are typically used when you have a lot of iron or other heavy metals in the water. They can make a significant difference in water quality, flavor, and clarity.

Servicing Your Water Filtration System

Once you select the water filtration system and have it installed, keeping it running properly is essential. The system will need flushing from time to time, and the media inside the water filtration system will need replacing eventually.

Often service on these systems is scheduled for six-month intervals, but talk to the company providing your system and see what they recommend. You can set up a service contract with them and have a tech come to service the system for you.
